WHY IS MY DISHWASHER NOT STARTING

WHAT HOUSEHOLD DOESN’T RELY ON THEIR DISHWASHER? EVERY DAY, THESE KITCHEN APPLIANCES HELP US SPEND LESS TIME WASHING DISHES AND CLEANING UP AFTER MEALS, AND MORE TIME DOING THE THINGS WE LOVE.

Is your dishwasher not working? We’ve got you covered as this article will guide you through the steps you can take to assess and troubleshoot potential reasons as to why this might be happening. Additionally, it offers information on how to proceed if a problem with your dishwasher persists.

REASONS WHY YOUR DISHWASHER IS NOT WORKING

Here are some common reasons as to why your dishwasher may not be starting or functioning properly:

  • The control lock is on
  • The appliance is in sleep mode
  • The delayed wash option was selected
  • The dishwasher door isn’t fully closed and latched
  • The water supply is turned off
  • The power needs to be cycled to reset the dishwasher

Let’s review each of these in more detail.

WHAT IS THE CONTROL LOCK?

The purpose of the Control Lock is to lock the controls to help avoid unintended use. It can be used whether the dishwasher is on or off. Households with children who like to touch buttons may find this to be a useful function.

PRO TIP: Press the actual button to activate Control Lock, not where it says, "Hold 3 sec".

IS THE CONTROL LOCK "ON"?

The control lock safeguards dishwashers against unintended or incidental use. If activated, the control lock light will be on for only a short amount of time. During this time, all the buttons will be disabled. If you press a button while the controls are locked, the light will flash three times. To turn off the Control Lock, press and hold the Lock Button for four seconds. This should turn off the lock light.

PRO TIP:The door can still be opened or closed while the controls are locked.

IS THE DISHWASHER IN SLEEP MODE?

You can disable Sleep Mode, available on certain models, by pressing either START/RESUME or CANCEL. You may have to open and close the door to turn off the Control Lock before disabling Sleep Mode.

HAS A DELAY WASH OPTION BEEN SELECTED?

The purpose of the delay wash option is to allow you to run your dishwasher at a later time. This means your dishwasher can turn on while you’re sleeping or during off-peak electrical hours. If selected, the dishwasher will start operating once the delay time is reached.

To turn delay wash on or off:

  • Press CANCEL/DRAIN to cancel the delay.
  • Press START/RESUME to start the cycle.

IS THE DOOR COMPLETELY CLOSED AND LATCHED?

Always make sure that the dishwasher door is completely closed and latched. If not, check to see if a lower dish rack was installed backward as this is fairly common.

IS THE WATER SUPPLY TURNED ON TO THE DISHWASHER?

Sometimes a dishwasher won’t start because the water supply is off. Make sure the water supply for the dishwasher is on.

Review the installation instructions for your specific model for guidance on how to inspect this.

HOW TO RESET YOUR DISHWASHER?

Sometimes, all you have to do is reset your dishwasher to get it started.

To reset your dishwasher control, you need to disconnect it from the power source for one minute. First, locate the power source your dishwasher uses.

  • If your dishwasher is plugged into an outlet, unplug it for one minute and then plug it back in.
  • If the dishwasher is hard wired to the power supply, you must turn the breaker off at the home electrical panel that powers the dishwasher for one minute and then turn the breaker back on.
