How Do Cooktops and Ranges Differ?

The right appliance can improve your kitchen. But with many types of cooking appliances on the market, a question homeowners often ask is: “what’s the difference between a range and cooktop?"

Before deciding which is right for your kitchen, it's important to understand the differences between them.

This article can help you understand the differences between cooktops and ranges, and the advantages of each, so you can determine which appliance is best for you.

What is a Range?

A range refers to when a stovetop or cooktop and an oven are combined into one model.

What is a Cooktop?

In order to achieve seamless integration, these appliances are usually installed on the countertop and purchased alongside a separate oven. Cooktops are also available in different sizes and configurations.

What Is The Best Option For My Kitchen Size?

If you are working with a limited amount of cabinet and wall space, a range may be more suitable than a standalone cooktop and wall oven. If you prefer built-in appliances, wall ovens and cooktops can still work in smaller spaces as many manufacturers offer 24” width models designed specifically for small spaces.

A range normally measures 24, 30, 36, or 48 inches in width, so it often fits into cabinet openings, making it convenient for most kitchens.

Wall ovens take up approximately the same amount of space as a 30" range whereas double or combination wall ovens take up more vertical cabinet space.

It’s also important to note that storage space is available under the cooktop and some wall oven brands allow the wall oven to be installed directly underneath a cooktop.

It’s recommended to always check the installation instructions before purchasing your appliances to confirm all installation requirements.

Do I Need One or Two Ovens?

How you typically cook should determine whether you need one or two ovens. When deciding, take into consideration these factors:

  • Can I fit two ovens in my kitchen?

  • Does one oven consistently provide enough capacity?

  • Do I normally prepare several dishes at once?

If you prefer ranges, you'll be happy to learn that some brands offer double oven models. Remember, the second oven is often smaller, so if you require two full-sized ovens then the better option is typically a double wall oven.

Which Option Is Best Suited to My Cooking Habits?

Consider your individual cooking habits when choosing between a range or a standalone cooktop and wall oven. Before deciding, consider the following:

  • Take into account the distance between the stovetop and the oven when preparing food using both appliances.

  • A range oven can make lifting heavy pots difficult. A wall oven may be a more ergonomic option since you can install it at a height that is comfortable for you.

  • Do you cook a lot? Solo cooks don't have to worry about competing for access to appliances. When you have two or more chefs in your kitchen, it's wise to design your workspaces, so you don't get in each other's way. It is possible to have separate cooking and baking zones with a cooktop and wall oven configuration.

Which Design is Best For My Kitchen Style?

For your kitchen design, do you place a high value on professionalism? Some brands offer this look with their professional-style ranges. These ranges come in a variety of sizes, typically offering more cooking capacity.

Perhaps you enjoy the sleek look of built-in appliances? If so, a wall oven and cooktop may be right for you. For those who prefer the over-under setup of a range, a cooktop with a wall oven beneath might be the better choice.
